Why choose this course?

This course will give you both mathematical knowledge at degree level and the professional qualification of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) which will allow you to take up a teaching post within a secondary school. You will undertake periods of University-based learning and you will spend at least 120 days divided between a range of different schools at different times during the three years. Teaching on the course reflects a variety of methodologies that will prepare you for life in the classroom including teacher-led debates, pupil-led exploration, peer-group discovery and the provision of individual targets. You will be assessed in a variety of ways including written assignments; classroom based investigations and other school-based activities, and appraisals of practical teaching skills.

The Mathematics content of this programme is significant. During the three years, you will share many classes with students enrolled on the B.Sc. (Hons) Mathematics programme. Indeed the level of mathematics involved will enable you to pursue alternative career options outside of teaching should you so desire. The expertise and transferrable skills you will receive will leave you well positioned for any career associated with the mathematical sciences.

What happens on the course?

Year 1. You will begin by reinforcing the mathematical foundations learned at previous levels with an emphasis on Calculus, Algebra, Set Theory and Mathematical Proof. You will build on this knowledge by studying Probability & Statistics and Operational Research. In addition you will study Education topics such as Subject Specific Pedagogy – Justifying the Specialist Subject.

Year 2. You will be introduced to more specialised and advanced mathematical topics including Group Theory, Linear Algebra, Mathematical Modelling and Discrete Mathematics. In addition you will study Education topics such as Subject Specific Pedagogy – Teaching the Specialist Subject and Professional Development – The Beginning: The Teacher.

Year 3. You will study more advanced topics such as Rings & Fields and you will also be introduced to some topics from the history of Mathematics. There will be an emphasis on group work and collaborative presentations. The educational content on offer will include Subject Specific Pedagogy – Investigating Practise and Professional Development – The Developing Teacher. You will also be given the opportunity to undertake a final year project, which is a significant piece of independent study supervised by a member of academic staff.

Additional Information

The three years will be spent both in University based learning and an amount of time each year will be spent in school. You will have one school attachment each year and these will vary in length.

Your University Tutor is available to assist you throughout your training, and every effort is made to ensure you have a high quality school placement, where you can learn from experienced teachers. We will try to take your geographical location into account when placing you in schools.

Career path

At the end of this programme you will be fully qualified to take up a post as a Teacher at secondary level. Mathematics teachers are very much in demand throughout the United Kingdom and there are currently more vacancies for teachers of Mathematics than there are graduates to fill the positions.

If you decide to pursue a career outside the teaching profession you will still be in a very strong position. It is no exaggeration to say that today there are more career options open to a mathematics graduate than to a graduate from any other science. A popular choice for Mathematics graduates is to move into the world of finance. Options include working as a Quantitative Analyst, Financial Analyst, Risk Analyst, or Business Analyst. Our degree also leaves you perfectly positioned to play a part in the Big Data revolution. The emphasis on Mathematical & Statistical Modelling prepares you to work as a Data Scientist, Data Analyst or Data Engineer. Our Operational Research content is also designed to give you the opportunity to move into more strategic roles within Project Management and Vulnerability Analysis. Statisticians and Mathematical Modelling experts are in demand across a broad spectrum including Scientific and Medical Research, Educational Consultancy and Government planning.

Who accredits this course?

    • This course leads to the professional qualification of QTS – Qualified Teacher Status. The University will recommend students who have demonstrated competence in the Professional Standards to the Teaching Agency – who will award QTS.
    • The award of QTS is essential to teach in a school in the United Kingdom and on gaining this award the student becomes a qualified teacher.
    • This degree is also accredited by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, which means that the graduates meet the educational requirements for the Chartered Mathematician (CMath) designation.

Pre-entry Professional Skills Tests

Applicants for initial teacher training (ITT) courses which begin in 2013/14 and beyond are required to have passed the skills tests before the start of the course, Further information is available via the following link:

You will not be eligible to register and take the tests until after you have submitted an application for an ITT programme.

An offer of a place will not be made until you have attended a formal interview. Those successful in the audits and at interview will be subsequently required to meet enhanced DBS checks, fitness to teach, medical check and prohibition order check requirements

If you have accepted a Conditional Offer made by the University of Wolverhampton you will receive correspondence asking you to complete an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. The charge for this will be a DBS fee of £44.00 and a £6.00 ID check service fee. You will also need an Occupational Health Check and a prohibition check prior to starting the course.

All applicants must meet the NCTL requirements for Initial Teacher Training.

Those who do not meet the entry requirements may be offered an alternative course.
