Our B.Sc. (Hons) in Industrial Mathematics offers a more engineering focused programme of study than our other options. This programme has been designed with the assistance of our colleagues in the School of Engineering and aims to marry the mathematical content to applications within engineering.
To achieve this end you will be given the opportunity to study engineering topics such as Signal Processing and Control Engineering as well as the Mathematics content such as Modelling, Statistics and Operational Research. Similar to the B.Sc. (Hons) in Mathematics the programme starts by reinforcing the mathematical foundations you will have studied at previous levels and gradually introduces more advanced and specialised content areas. In second and subsequent years there is a strong focus on Mathematical & Statistical Modelling, Operational Research, Statistical Cybermetrics and Engineering Applications.
Within these areas there will be an emphasis on Industrial problems such as logistics, quality control and web intelligence. The expertise and transferrable skills you will receive will leave you well positioned for any career associated with the mathematical and engineering sciences. You will also be given guidance in the use of specialist mathematical, operational research and statistical software such as SPSS, Maple, GPSS and R. An appreciation of good professional practice and the development of essential employability skills are also embedded in the course.
Year 1. You will begin by reinforcing the mathematical foundations learned at previous levels with an emphasis on Calculus, Algebra, Set Theory and Mathematical Proof. You will build on this knowledge by studying Probability & Statistics and Operational Research while gradually being introduced to mathematical software including Maple and Minitab.
Year 2. You will be introduced to more specialised and advanced mathematical and engineering topics including Mathematical Modelling, Industrial Statistics, Signal Processing and Electro Mechanical Control Systems. You will also be given the option to undertake specialist modules in Discrete Mathematics and Operational Research.
Year 3. You will study Advanced Signal Processing, Control Engineering, Advanced Calculus and Probability Theory. Depending on your chosen options in Year 2 you will have the option to study Advanced Operations Research and Advanced Algebra. You will also be given the opportunity to undertake a final year project, which is a significant piece of independent study supervised by a member of academic staff.
Following the changing demand in recent mathematical research and applications, this course has evolved to provide a modern outlook on the subject and the important role it plays in the ever-changing world of commerce, industry and education.

Another popular choice for Mathematics graduates is to move into the world of finance. Options include working as a Quantitative Analyst, Financial Analyst, Risk Analyst, or Business Analyst. Our degree also leaves you perfectly positioned to play a part in the Big Data revolution.
The emphasis on Mathematical & Statistical Modelling prepares you to work as a Data Scientist, Data Analyst or Data Engineer. Our Operational Research content is also designed to give you the opportunity to move into more strategic roles within Project Management and Vulnerability Analysis. Statisticians and Mathematical Modelling experts are in demand across a broad spectrum including Scientific and Medical Research, Educational Consultancy and Government planning.
You will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the essential concepts, principles, theories and techniques relating to mathematics, statistics and operational research.
Using specialist computer software where appropriate, you will be able to model real world situations and apply mathematical and statistical techniques to develop solutions to practical problems.
You will follow mathematical and statistical arguments and develop such arguments of your own.
There will be opportunity to show judgement when selecting and applying a wide range of statistical and operational research tools and techniques.
You will develop of a range of transferable skills in problem solving, communication, project management, working individually and in teams, self-management and the ability to gather, synthesise, evaluate and reflect on information from relevant sources.
This will enable you to demonstrate a range of personal, organisational and professional skills needed for continuing professional development in the global community
This course is in the process of being accredited by the The Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA).
Once you have graduated, this accreditation will enable you to join the IMA. This is the first step in becoming a Chartered Mathematician (CMath).
Students must have studied a minimum of two years post GCSE level. However, it is expected that some applicants will be mature students with work experience, who wish to further their career development.
