Why choose this course?

The Extended International Foundation Year will allow you to develop your capabilities to study in a specific subject as well as enhancing your English language skills. You will develop an understanding of the expectations and the academic skills required to study successfully for a degree in the UK. On successful completion of the course, you will then be able to apply for a degree course at the University of Wolverhampton, subject to professional body requirements.

During the course, you will study a mixture of subject specific modules, for example:

  • Introduction to Health and Awareness or Introduction to Health and Wellbeing

and more general modules such as:

  • Getting Ahead as an International Student - that will expand your English language and learning skills in preparation for your higher education journey.

You are encouraged to increase the benefit of the various tasks undertaken in the general study skills/language modules by applying them to some of the topics from your chosen academic subject.

To summarise, the course will give you;

• An introduction to your chosen specialist subject

• A solid foundation in the key academic skills like research and referencing that will support degree level study.

• Academic language development skills

• A choice of pathways based on your chosen degree course

The International Academy is accredited by the British Council (Accreditation UK) for the quality of English Language provision.

What happens on the course?

Our dedicated staff provide expert support and tuition to help prepare you for your future study choices a typical week will include 15-20 contact hours (teacher-led learning).

All modules include a number of tutorial sessions either in small group sessions or one-to-one.

You will have access to extensive online facilities, as well as our learning centres/ libraries, allowing you to make the most of the resources available to you.

Tests and examinations

You are assessed by completing a wide range of learning activities that will be appropriate to the learning outcomes of the individual modules that you study. The assessments are designed to give you experience of and to develop skills that you will need for further study in higher education in the UK

There are two types of assessment used on this course:

  • Formative assessment will help to guide, encourage and support you to understand the expectations of your chosen academic study and general expectations of studying at a HE level. Advice will be given that is relevant to the learning outcomes and assessment criteria and will identify areas for improvement or enhancement.
  • Summative assessment is marked against learning outcomes and assessment criteria. It will give you your grade that will contribute to your course award.

Why Wolverhampton?

On the Extended International Foundation Year, you will join our friendly community at Telford Innovation Campus. You may have some teaching in the historic Priorslee Hall, where the International Academy is based.

Telford Innovation Campus has social areas with comfy sofas, TVs and games consoles, table tennis and tea and coffee making facilities. It also has outdoor exercise equipment, sports field, and a floodlit hard court for football, basketball and tennis.

The International Academy is based in the historic Priorslee Hall at the University’s Telford Innovation Campus in Shropshire. We offer a friendly place of welcome in safe, relaxed surroundings.

Telford Town Centre is nearby which has many shops, restaurants and entertainment venues. Telford Central railway station enables easy travel around the UK and a free shuttle bus provides regular transport to the other University of Wolverhampton campuses.

Course leader for the International Foundation Year, Mr Alistair MacDonald has many years of experience and expertise in teaching English and counselling international students at the International Academy.

He provides one-to-one contact with the International Foundation Year students at the International Academy.

He also teaches and visits our partner institutions in Cyprus, China and Sri Lanka and provides a strategic and fundamental link for continuing and progressing international education at the University of Wolverhampton.

He was recently nominated for the University of Wolverhampton’s staff excellence awards and is also an external advisor for other universities.

You will also benefit from the range of expertise from various members of academic staff for your subject-specific learning.

Career path

The aim of this course is to allow you to progress onto a degree programme in your chosen subject at the University of Wolverhampton (or at another UK university which recognises the programme), subject to professional body requirements.

Most of our Extended International Foundation Year students continue onto their chosen degree programmes at the University of Wolverhampton, but should you wish to progress to another University we have a progression agreement with Oxford Brookes University, provided you meet the following conditions:

  • Evidence of a completed High School Certificate with satisfactory results.
  • Successful completion of the Foundation Programme at the University of Wolverhampton with a minimum grade of 60/65% for most Oxford Brookes University undergraduate programmes. Oxford Brookes University may also require minimum marks on specific modules.
  • Fully completed UCAS application form, with an appropriate personal statement and good academic references from tutors.
  • Proof of English language proficiency. For most programmes this will be an IELTS score of 6.0 overall, with a minimum of 6.0 in Reading and Writing. Law and Psychology require IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in Reading and Writing.

We also have a progression agreement with the University of Brighton for their undergraduate Business courses only, subject to conditions which include WEPE/IELTS 6 overall with 6 in writing and minimum 5.5 in other areas.

We are also having ongoing discussions with several other institutions.

On completing the Extended International Foundation Year, you will be well prepared for further academic study at the University of Wolverhampton (or another UK university which recognises the programme), subject to professional body requirements.

You will be able to:
