Giving you a comprehensive engineering education combined with specialist knowledge of electro-mechanical systems, this course addresses industry’s demand for graduates who can integrate the principles and applications of mechanical, electrical and electronic engineering. You will learn to evaluate a range of solutions to engineering problems, and to select and apply appropriate solutions to engineering systems. You will use software packages to design, analyse, and evaluate system designs. As you progress, you will develop your integrative approach to designing electro-mechanical systems and become familiar with the techniques of digital signal processing. In the first year of the course, you will study engineering principles across a broad range of topics. The second year combines mechanical engineering subjects with areas such as embedded systems, digital and analogue electronics and electronic systems design. In the final year of the BEng, there is an emphasis on the design and analysis of electromechanical systems. You will also have the opportunity of preparing a business plan around a product that you have designed. If you continue onto the MEng, you will study modules such as robotics sensors and control and condition monitoring, and undertake a substantive and integrative project that embraces much of what has been learnt in doing the course, as well as broadening subjects such as business management and accounting.
All of our degrees have a common first year, allowing you to experience a range of subjects before deciding on the course you wish to follow. You will study Mathematics, and the underlying concepts of Electrical, Mechanical, Materials, and Production Engineering. You will undertake laboratory work; and utilise your new production knowledge to build and test a design.
In the second year, you will extend your knowledge of the engineering technologies and management, create design specifications, and become proficient in the use of a control system design and analysis package, and an electronics design package. You will also learn the role and responsibilities of a professional engineer.
Following the second academic year, you are encouraged to undertake a placement year in industry, thereby improving your employment prospects and forming part of your record of professional development as an Incorporated or Chartered Engineer.
In your final year you will complete an individual project, further develop your integrative approach to designing electro-mechanical systems, become familiar with the techniques of digital signal processing, and learn how to convert an idea into a commercial venture.
Responding to the regional and national shortage of graduate qualified Engineers the University of Wolverhampton is currently investing over £10m in new Engineering facilities at its Telford Innovation Campus and City Campus in Wolverhampton.
New Engineering courses on offer from 2015 share a design that incorporates significant elements of problem and activity-based learning and live industrial project-work. The courses have embedded themes of creativity, employability, professional engineering, and sustainability and the environment. All of our courses are designed to meet the latest standards for accreditation as defined by the Engineering Council.
Students studying Engineering courses will have access to new specialist equipment and technology that is at the forefront of engineering developments. This includes a design and visualisation facility modeled on best-practice in industry, wind tunnels (including a formula-1 specification rolling road wind tunnel), engine test facilities, a composites laboratory, 3-d printing facilities, an electronics and telecommunications laboratory, a metrology laboratory and a materials testing laboratory.
Our aim is for our graduates to be ready for employment. We provide additional opportunities for students to gain employability skills, with employability workshops and awards as part of the course. In addition and to further develop employability skills, we offer ‘Club Activities’. These currently include the IMechE Formula Student Activity, the Human Powered Flight Club, the Flight Simulator Club and the Formula Renault 2l Racing Team Club. These are great fun, and the only conditions to entry are that you need to engage and demonstrate commitment.
All engineering courses are offered from the Telford Innovation Campus, located close to Telford town centre in rural Shropshire. Chemical Engineering is the exception to this, and this is offered at City Campus in Wolverhampton.

A qualification in Mechatronics provides career opportunities in a broad spectrum of industries, as well as offering a gateway to all levels in the education sector. Mechatronics graduates have followed career paths as diverse as research and development within aerospace companies through to secondary school teaching. In the contemporary industrial environment, the approach to problem solving, design, and research and development activities is to form multidisciplinary teams, thereby ensuring that all avenues are explored and evaluated. The Mechatronics engineer is well placed in this structure, since the ethos of the subject is broad based.
The course enables graduates to attain management positions, with significant levels of responsibility within a relatively short time.
Graduates may also study for a taught postgraduate degree, MSc, or a research degree, MPhil/PhD, within the Department.
The transferable skills gained during the course, including: project management, group working, and analytical thinking, also enable a graduate to pursue careers in non-technical fields such as: law, accountancy, authoring, and computing.
At the end of this course, the student will be able to:
· design and synthesise mechatronic products, systems, and processes, and demonstrate an innovative approach to design realisation
· evaluate a range of solutions to engineering problems, drawn from a broad-based knowledge of engineering and technology disciplines
· select and apply appropriate mathematical methods to solve problems in the analysis and synthesis of engineering systems
· contribute to teamwork effectively and ethically, addressing the prominent engineering, social, environmental, and commercial issues
· select and apply appropriate software packages for design, analysis, and synthesis applications and critically evaluate the results
· relate theory and practice, thereby facilitating the efficient realisation of viable engineering products and processes
This course is accredited by the institute of Mechanical engineers. The course is accredited by the institution of Engineering and technology for intakes up to 2013/14 and it is currently being sought for the 2014/15 intake. Students entering directly into final year of the course should enquire as to the accreditation status.
GCSE English, Mathematics and Science or Technology at grade C or equivalents.
Applicants holding/studying an Access to HE Diploma maybe considered on an individual basis.
