The BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering course is intended as your first step towards becoming a Chartered Civil Engineer and a practitioner in the global community.
Civil Engineers are responsible for the design, management and construction of major infrastructure projects such as transport projects, bridges, major buildings, water supply, sewage, harbours and sea defences.
Graduates from the BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering programme are characterised by their ability to develop appropriate solutions to engineering challenges by using new or existing technologies, through innovation, creativity and change. Chartered Engineers are variously engaged in technical and commercial leadership and possess effective interpersonal skills as well as digital literacy.
There is progressive development of a student’s ability to apply mathematics and analytical skills. At level one the focus is on the underlying principles, whereas at level three emphasis is placed on the solving of realistic design problems.
At level three all students have to undertake an individual research project which must involve the review of current literature, data collection as well as critical analysis, discussion and conclusion.
A graduate of the BEng. course will have qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment - the ability to exercise initiative, make decisions in complex situations (with often limited data) and prepation for lifelong learning.
The BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering provides the requisite knowledge to become a professional member of the Civil Engineering community.
Lecturers on this course are a blend of respected academics and experienced professionals. Students are exposed to a sound theoretical base coupled with numerous practical exercises.
The Civil Engineering section has excellent links with local Civil Engineering companies as well as the local branches of the professional bodies, namely the Institution of Civil Engineers and the Institution of Structural Engineers.
We are currently developing the Springfield Campus which will be Europe’s largest construction centre of excellence. Join us as the exciting development takes shape and from 2019/20 students in the School of Architecture and the Built environment will be taught from the new campus.

There are many significant employment opportunities in Civil Engineering with graduates working for contractors, consultants, local authorities, government and public bodies, the armed forces, and academic and research establishments. Civil Engineering also offers opportunities to work both on a national and international basis on a variety of exciting infrastructure projects.
A BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering graduate will be able to :
You will also adopt professional standards, recognising obligations to safety, the profession, and the environment. In addition, you will incorporate the mathematical and analytical skills necessary for understanding high level engineering science with practical applications.
The BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) for the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT) and the Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE). This level of accreditation is the highest possible for a BEng degree, namely partial CEng and full IEng accreditation. This degree is accredited as:
1. fully satisfying the educational base for an Incorporated Engineer (IEng).
2. partially satisfying the educational base for a Chartered Engineer (CEng).
A programme of accredited Further Learning will be required to complete the educationalbase for CEng.
See www.jbm.org.uk for further information and details of Further Learning programmes for CEng.
Students must have studied a minimum of two years post GCSE level. However, it is expected that some applicants will be mature students with work experience, who wish to further their career development. These applicants will be processed through standard procedures, which may involve an interview as part of the process. Please see http://wlv.ac.uk/mature for further information.
Those who do not meet the entry requirements may be offered an alternative course.
