The Master in Molecular Bioscience is a four year undergraduate degree where the final year is studied completely at Masters level. This course is ideal for giving a broad education in biochemistry, molecular biology and genetics. It introduces students to the latest developments in the molecular biological sciences and develops key practical skills. This course will also introduce the rapidly developing field of bioinformatics and introductory computing skills. It particularly concentrates on how these skills can be used in disease investigation. Research projects will be coupled to active research within the University. Jobs are available in international research centres, large and small pharmaceutical and biotech companies, health industries and hospitals. This Masters course can lead to careers in research and further study at PhD level.

Year 1 provides an extensive introduction to this interesting and exciting subject. You will learn about biochemistry, cell biology and genetics, with supporting subject knowledge and practical skills in chemistry, microbiology and physiology. You can choose from options that allow you to look at human disease prevention and treatment, and how our immune systems can help us fight diseases, and the world of plants.
Year 2 allows you to gain extensive experience in practical molecular bioscience. You will you will learn how the biochemistry of organisms helps them adapt to their environment and explore the genetics and molecular biology of living cells in more depth. You can choose to study the origins and evolution of life, the nature of man-made and natural drug effectiveness, the molecular basis of diseases.
You can choose to take an optional year-long work placement in your third year, or go directly to your third year which covers how we can examine gene sequences to forward the frontiers of science, apply genetic information to problems of medical importance. You will have the opportunity to complete a thorough piece of scientific research as well as a chance to further your own interest via an independent survey of an area of biochemistry. You can opt to study assess the role played by biochemistry in diagnosing diseases and look at ethical issues concerning modern biochemists, the biotechnology of plant species in roles as diverse as bioenergy and medical pharmaceuticals, the evolution of humans or common laboratory practice issues for molecular biosciences workers.
The final year extends your research experience by continuing the project that was begun in year 3. You will then develop skills at the forefront of modern genetics and molecular biology and learn the computer skills needed to enable you to research information from the wealth of information stored on numerous databases, and then apply this knowledge to investigate bioinformatics in the real-world.
