What will I study?

  • During Year 1 you will look at approaches to childbirth and health in contemporary society, explore physiological and psychological aspects of childbirth, develop an awareness of research and gain essential clinical skills. You will also have a short placement to gain an insight into the medical and surgical conditions that can impact upon pregnancy. You will follow a block-based structure, involving several weeks of theory followed by several weeks of practice.
  • Year 2 will extend your knowledge of the fundamentals of midwifery theory. Your studies will allow you to develop a deeper understanding of neonatal care, sexual and reproductive health, midwifery care and practice, and the legal and ethical framework of midwifery practice, focusing on normal midwifery practice.
  • Year 3 develops your understanding of midwifery care including high risk and care of the mother and baby. There will be an opportunity to handle a small caseload under the supervision of a qualified midwife. You will be expected to develop an electronic portfolio during your studies.

Entry requirements

  • You must have 200-260 tariff points including a minimum of 180 points from two full 6-unit awards or one full 12-unit award or a quality-assured Access to Higher Education course with a minimum of 54 Level Three credits
  • You must have a minimum of five GCSEs at Grade C or above (or equivalent) which must include an English-based subject, plus Maths or a science subject
  • Qualifications should preferably be in a health or science-related subject
  • Applicants who are shortlisted will be interviewed, and will be expected to undertake a written and numeracy test as part of the selection process
  • Good health and good character are fundamental to being a nurse or midwife, and consequently all nursing and midwifery students must have a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check and satisfactory health clearance. Any student who undertakes exposure-prone procedures as part of their training will be required to have additional screening for HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C
