The BA (Hons) Music Technology is aimed at aspiring, creative users and developers of audio technologies.

The course offers a unique insight into the expanded field of music technology, giving you a blend of creative practice in music with a technical perspective critical for success within the rapidly developing music events business. This course stimulates your innate love of music, music production and music technologies, explores and identifies what music is, what music does, and what music means and provides a structured approach to your career progression as technologist, producer, performer, composer, teacher, or academic.

What happens on the course?

In the first year you will be given an introduction to theory and practice, taking modules in acoustics, audio programming and music theory, studio engineering and mixdown, live sound engineering, and academic skills.

In your second year you will continue your research and practice in studio engineering and production, including DSP theory and advanced mixdown and mastering using both hybrid and surround systems. You will explore key developments in music technology, and develop skills in synthesis and game sound.

In your final year you will develop your professional practice and expand your skills, explore software and hardware interface design, practice in multimedia production, and develop music for image. You will also undertake your final project, which will be a significant piece of work such as an album, a video game or film soundtrack, or a dissertation.

You will have hands-on experience with the latest digital music technologies in our dedicated Mac suites and recording studios, whilst developing an advanced range of music technology skills for the creation and production of sound in a variety of contexts including studio recording and production, using music programming languages, and creating music for multimedia. The course is taught by an experienced and dedicated teaching staff with significant involvement from industry professionals, meaning you will be ready to respond to the technological, academic and artistic innovations within the industry.

The University of Wolverhampton continues to develop state of the art facilities at its Walsall campus to greatly enhance your learning experience. The Performance Hub has a diverse range of fully equipped music teaching, performance and practice rooms (accommodating a single person to a large band/ensemble), two high-end professional recording studios, and two bespoke technology suites running industry standard software including Pro Tools and Logic Pro. Our two recording studios offer the perfect blend of digital and analogue technologies, giving students the opportunity to combine classic analogue recording technique with the flexibility and reliability digital technology provides. As well as a dedicated live room each for recording, for increased flexibility and choice of room acoustic, any of the music rehearsal rooms surrounding each studio can also be patched into the studio’s control room.

Who accredits this course?

This course is Industry Accredited by JAMES (Joint Audio Media Education Support). JAMES accredits education on behalf of the APRS (Association of Professional Recording Services), MPG (Music Producers Guild), MMF (Music Managers’ Forum), AMPS (Association of Motion Picture Sound), MIA (Music Industry Association), ABTT (Association of British Theatre Technicians), PLASA and the UK Screen Association. BASCA (British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors) and IASIG (Interactive Audio Special Interest Group) are endorsing members of the JAMES Accreditation Scheme. Accreditation of a course by relevant industry bodies provides assurance to students and employers of its potential and value.

Other Requirements

Those meeting the entry requirements will be shortlisted for an interview.

Students must have studied a minimum of two years post GCSE level. However, it is expected that some applicants will be mature students with work experience, who wish to further their career development. These applicants will be processed through standard procedures, which may involve an interview as part of the process. Please see for further information.
